The meeting was held at Imam Khomeini Hussainiya in Tehran on the occasion of the 46th anniversary of the uprising by the people of Qom against the former regime of Iranian dictator Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi.
“We must not forget the power of people to play a role in major events,” he said during a meeting with some two thousand people from the central province of Qom.
“We experienced this in our lifetime. We should not forget this experience and should share it with others,” he added.
He pointed to the developments in Gaza, saying people’s presence and their resistance against occupation have frustrated the Zionist regime and the United States. “This is what people’s presence means,” he asserted.
Commemorating the 46th anniversary of the uprising by the people of Qom against the former regime of Iranian dictator Mohammad-Reza Pahlavi, Ayatollah Khamenei said the Qom uprising was an even greater event than the Gaza uprising.
“The people of Qom came to the streets, some were martyred, some were beaten, and some went to prison, but they initiated a movement that managed to overthrow in nearly a year an arrogant, oppressive, dependent regime that ruled over this country,” he explained.
The Supreme Leader said the former regime that was overthrown by the Iranian nation on February 11, 1979, and was expelled from a “holy” and “divine” country was a coup regime that was dependent on others.
Pointing to efforts, including by US politicians, to whitewash the Pahlavi regime, Ayatollah Khamenei said, “Some still do not want to believe this after forty years.”
He argued that the strategic policy of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Imam Khomeini, was to bring people to the political arena while the enemy’s strategic policy was to repel people from the arena.
Not participating in the elections is what the enemies want, he said. “Creating polarization in the society is one of the goals of the foes of the Iranian nation.”
Elsewhere in his comments, the Supreme Leader pointed to the recent deadly terrorist attack in the city of Kerman, saying the Islamic Republic will pursue and punish the perpetrators and masterminds vigorously.
“The relevant authorities are seriously trying to deal with the Kerman incident and have done a good job,” he said.
