-- Iran names 27-man squad in hunt of Asian Cup glory
Iran head coach Amir Qalenoei on Sunday announced the 27-man squad for the upcoming AFC Asian Cup – starting January 12 in Qatar.
AS Roma striker Sardar Azmoun has been named in the squad but could still be Iran’s major absentee in Qatar due to his commitments in the one-year loan contract with the Serie A club.
However, the Iranian Football Federation said it is in talks with the Giallorossi to convince Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho to release the national team’s talisman for the four-week tournament.
All 24 Asian teams will have until Tuesday to announce 26 players for the tournament.

-- Lawyer Slams Sweden’s Travesty of Justice Against Iranian
Hamid Nouri’s life sentence is a violation of human rights, says his lawyer, criticizing the Swedish government’s trial of the former Iranian official on false allegations.
In remarks cited by the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet (SvD), Thomas Bodstrom, Nouri’s lawyer, stated that the Swedish Court of Appeals finally confirmed Nouri’s sentence of life imprisonment despite the many violations in the process of handling the case.
-- Iranian Armenians Mark Advent of New Christian Year
The Armenian community in Iran’s Isfahan gathered at Vank Church in the Jolfa district of Isfahan to mark the beginning of the new Christian year. Vank Cathedral, also known as the Church of the Saintly Sisters, is the most visited cathedral in Isfahan. Vank means “cathedral” in the Armenian language.
Vank Cathedral was one of the first churches to be established in the city’s Jolfa district by Armenian deportees settled by Shah Abbas I after the Ottoman War of 1603-1605. Its construction is believed to have begun in 1606 and completed with major alterations to design between 1655 and 1664 under the supervision of Archbishop David.
-- Indonesia, Iran to Open Robotic Telesurgery Center
Iran and Indonesia on Sunday agreed as part of a joint venture to open a robotic telesurgery center at a hospital in the Asian country’s port city of Makassar.
Over a virtual meeting here between Iran’s Vice President for Science, Technology, and Knowledge-based Economy Rouhollah Dehghani, and Indonesia’s Minister of Health Budi Gonadi Sadikin, the two sides agreed on setting up the center.
In a robotic telesurgery center operations will be carried out by using a robotic surgeon that is controlled by a human based at a faraway distance.

-- Nationwide event “Narration of Habib” to commemorate martyr General Soleimani
The 3rd edition of the national cultural event of “Narration of Habib” dedicated to the martyr Lieutenant General Qassem Soleimani, is set to be held nationwide on January 3. This event commemorates the anniversary of the assassination of General Soleimani, the commander of the IRGC Quds Force.
"At the fourth anniversary of Hajj Qassem Soleimani's martyrdom, the event will simultaneously take place in 40 locations throughout Iran and in 40 Zurkhaneh sports venues, in collaboration with the Zurkhaneh Sports Federation, across nine cities and 31 provincial centers," announced the event's secretary, Seyyed Mehdi Abtahi, during a press conference at Tehran's Art Bureau on Sunday.
-- Iran, Azerbaijan launch cross-border bridge to ease transit of goods
Iran and Azerbaijan inaugurated a cross-border bridge over the Astarachay River to facilitate transit of goods between the two countries. The opening ceremony of the border bridge was attended by Iranian and Azeri officials including the Co-Chairmen of the Iran-Azerbaijan Joint Economic Committee and Deputy Prime Minister of Azerbaijan Shahin Mustafayev and Iranian Minister of Transport and Urban Development Mehrdad Bazrpash.
The border, which has been completed at a cost of €5.8 million, runs parallel to the Baku-Astara freeway up to the Astara border, the portal of the Iranian Transport Ministry reported.
-- Unearthing history: archaeologists discover remnants of ‘mosque’ at Persepolis
In the latest archaeological endeavors at the historic site of the UNESCO-designated Persepolis, remnants of a “mosque” dating back to the early Islamic era have been unearthed on the western side of the Apadana palace.
Archaeologists and researchers Hamed Moulai and Younes Zare, detailed their findings in the Journal of the Society for Iranian archaeology (JOSIA), revealing the discovery of mosque-related elements adjacent to the northwestern side of the Apadana palace, ISNA reported on Sunday.
