Iran, Azerbaijan have ‘unique opportunity’ to expand trade: Minister

Rasht, IRNA – Iran’s Minister of Road and Urban Development Mehrdad Bazrpash has said that the Islamic Republic of Iran and the Republic of Azerbaijan have a “unique opportunity” to strengthen trade ties.

In an opening ceremony for the Astara-Astara cross-border bridge on Saturday, Bazrpash made the remarks in the northern Iranian city of Astara in the presence of Azerbaijan’s Deputy Prime Minister Shahin Mustafayev.

Referring to the significant economic ties between Iran and Azerbaijan, Bazrpash said that around 1.5 million tons of goods were exchanged between the two countries in 2023 in the form of import, export, and transit.

Pointing to the launching of the new cross-border bridge and establishing a temporary terminal for transferring goods between the two countries, he said that it is predicted to double the capacity of transportation by establishing the permanent route as soon as possible.

Iran and Azerbaijan enjoy a good level of communication, he said, adding that the two countries' ties have been expanded under the management of the two countries' authorities.

Mustafayev, for his part, said that the ties between the two countries are boosted in light of the wise management of the two countries' presidents.

He added that exchanging goods and transit goods between the two countries grew by 46% and 45%, respectively in the last year which shows the development of infrastructure for transit between the two countries.
