Iran, Armenia FMs meet in Yerevan

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has held talks with his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan in Yerevan in a bid to further expand mutual ties.

During the meeting, which was held on Wednesday, the two sides discussed bilateral issues, with Amirabdollahian stressing the need to accelerate the implementation of agreements to expand cooperation in fields such as transport, trade and energy.

The two diplomats also discussed regional issues including developments in the Caucasus region, which according to Amirabdollahian, has a key position in Iran’s neighborly policy.

The Armenian foreign minister also stressed the need to speed up the implementation of bilateral agreements, saying that ties with Iran is important for his country.

Amirabdollahian wrapped up his trip to Yerevan on Wednesday night, where he had arrived earlier in the day.

His trip took place two days after Iran signed a free trade agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union, under which the Islamic Republic and the bloc -- made up of five ex-Soviet states of Russia, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan -- will lift tariffs on 87% of the items being exchanged between them.

This was Amirabdollahian second visit to Armenia since last year when he inaugurated the first consulate general of the Islamic Republic of Iran in Kapan city on October 20, 2022.
