Iran: UNSC resolution on Gaza aid 'positive step but not enough'

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has said that the latest resolution passed by the UN Security Council (UNSC), which calls for boosting aid to Gaza, is "a positive but insufficient step".

The spokesman made the comment on Saturday a day after the UNSC passed Resolution 2720 following several delays throughout the week due to objections by the United States, the key supporter of the Israeli regime in its war on Gaza.

The US abstained from voting on the Friday resolution that had originally called for an urgent and sustainable ceasefire in Gaza. Washington has in the past weeks vetoed two other Security Council resolutions demanding a ceasefire in the Palestinian territory.

“It is very regrettable that, despite 77 days of the Zionist regime’s insane attacks against the defenseless people of Gaza, the US government continues to prevent the adoption of a binding Security Council resolution on halting the war and ending the Zionist regime’s war crimes and genocide in Gaza,” Kanaani said.

He added that the delivery of humanitarian aid to Gaza, where over 60% of residential buildings and urban infrastructures have been destroyed and people have been subjected to the most unprecedented war crimes in modern history, is practically impossible in the wake of relentless Israeli air attacks.

The remarks, which UN Chief Antonio Guterres made after Resolution 2720 was passed, are indicative of this bitter reality as well, the Iranian diplomat noted.

The adoption of the latest resolution does not diminish the UNSC responsibilities, Kanaani said, stressing that the US government remains the prime responsible party in the continued crimes against Palestinians in Gaza and even the occupied West Bank.
