-- Zimbabwe Iran’s gateway to East African market: MP
The head of the Iran-Zimbabwe Parliamentary Friendship Group said the African Continent has many unknown and attractive capacities for investment and cooperation with Iran, noting that Zimbabwe can be considered Iran’s gateway to the East African market.
Eqbal Shakeri told Iran Daily that stable collaboration have been established between the two countries in the fields of mining, agriculture and medical services, and extraterritorial cultivation.
A delegation comprised of Zimbabwean traders and some members of the parliamentary friendship group will visit Iran in the near future, the MP said, adding that during a recent visit of another delegation from the African country to Tehran, ways were studied to broaden the bilateral cooperation.
-- Tehran, Damascus to expand all-out trade ties
Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Mokhber underscored the “strategic and amicable” relations between the Islamic Republic and Syria.
The Iranian official said Tehran is determined to expand economic cooperation with Damascus.
“The Iranian government and nation attach profound significance to Syria, and consider the nation’s stability, independence, welfare and prosperity among their priorities,” Mokhber said in a meeting with visiting Syrian Prime Minister Hussein Arnous in Tehran on Saturday.
-- Iran to chase Olympic berth in Brazil, Japan, Philippines
Iran will take one last shot at a place in next summer’s Paris Olympics when visiting Brazil, Japan, and the Philippines for the preliminary round of the 2024 Volleyball Nations League – starting May 21. The international governing body of the sport, the FIVB, on Friday unveiled the initial draw for the men’s and women’s flagship annual event, where the top 16 national teams in each category were divided into three pools apiece.
Iran will kick off its campaign in Rio de Janeiro, alongside the host and 2021 champion Brazil, Japan – which marched to last year’s Finals before finishing third – Cuba, Germany, Serbia, Italy, and Argentina.

-- Navy Chief Outlines Plans for Regional Naval Coalition
The commander of Iran’s navy says his force is maintaining “maritime security” in the region in the face of the presence of extra-regional forces.
Admiral Shahram Irani also announced plans for a regional naval coalition and upcoming large-scale naval exercises involving other countries along southern coasts, with additional exercises slated for the Caspian Sea region.
-- ‘The Night Guardian’ Shortlisted for 96th Academy Awards
Iranian director Reza Mirkarimi’s “The Night Guardian” has been named eligible for the 96th Academy Awards, scheduled to take place on March 10, 2024.
The film has been included in the list of 88 eligible films for the Best International Feature category, as unveiled by the Academy, iFilm reported. On December 21, 2023 a shortlist of 15 films will be revealed, further narrowing down the contenders.
-- Official: NIOC to Rebuild 2nd Extraterritorial Refinery in Syria’s Homs
The coordination manager of the repair and maintenance department of Iran’s extraterritorial refineries Ali Shahverdi has said that the second extraterritorial refinery of the country will be rebuilt in Syria’s Homs province.
The 120,000-barrel refinery unit in Syria’s Homs province will be reconstructed by Iran with a contract similar to that of Venezuela’s El Palito Refinery, Shahverdi maintained. He said the administration of President Ebrahim Raisi has taken the issue of shareholding in extraterritorial refineries into serious consideration in order to own refinery units overseas with the aim of exporting its oil to other countries.

-- Iran’s “Suitcase” wins award at Red Sea film festival
Iranian short film “Suitcase” co-directed by Ako Zand-Karimi and Saman Hosseinpur won the Silver Yusr for Best Short Film at the 3rd Red Sea International Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Saturday.
A production of 2023, the film is about a Kurdish refugee who lives in his suitcase far from his own homeland. In it he carries memories of his family. When someone steals the suitcase in the tumult of the foreign city center, he loses his home a second time.
-- Tehran hosting 9th Iran-Qatar Joint Economic Committee meeting
The 9th meeting of the Iran-Qatar Joint Economic Committee started in Tehran on Saturday aimed at expanding economic cooperation and bolstering the constructive interaction between the two countries’ private sectors.
The meeting is co-chaired by Iran’s Energy Minister Ali-Akbar Mehranian and Qatari Minister of Commerce and Industry Sheikh Mohammed bin Hamad bin Qassim Al Abdullah Al Thani, the portal of the Iranian Energy Ministry reported.
-- Tehran, Muscat discuss ways to enhance sci-tech ties
Mohammad-Sadeq Khayatian, the head of Iran National Innovation Fund, and Abdul Aziz Mohammed Al Hinai, the deputy chairman at the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones of Oman, in a meeting in Tehran on Wednesday stressed the need for the development of scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries.
“In several visits to Iran, I have become familiar with Iranian products, companies, and industries closely,” Al Hinai said, highlighting the significance of research and development.
