‘Iran-Iraq border stability to increase if bilateral pact becomes law’

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Top Security Official Ali-Akbar Ahmadian and senior Iraqi lawmaker Mohsen Ali Akbar Namdar Al-Mandalawi have discussed a security pact between the two neighbors. Ahmadian has said that the passage of the pact as a law by the Iraqi parliament could be a key step in promoting security at the borders of the two countries.

Ahmadian, the secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council on Monday hosted Al-Mandalawi, the first deputy speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives for talks on a range of issues including the Gaza war and Tehran-Baghdad ties.

They also discussed the security agreement Iran and Iraq signed in March 2023 to fight terrorism and protect security at their borders, with the Iranian official expressing gratitude towards the Iraqi government as well as the country’s Kurdistan regional government in fighting terror groups.

Ahmadian said that considering an Iraqi constitutional ban on using Iraqi soil to launch attacks on its neighbors, the approval of the bilateral security pact as a law by the Iraqi parliament could be a very important and effective step in establishing lasting security and stability at the borders of the two countries.

The two discussed Tehran-Baghdad relations as well, with the Iraqi official saying that his country is ready to further expand its relations with Iran and that it will make efforts to remove obstacles in the way of trade and economic cooperation between the two sides.
