'Iran armed forces ready to counter threats to Iraq’s territorial integrity'

Tehran, IRNA – The Iranian armed forces are ready to counter any threat to the territorial integrity and national sovereignty of Iraq, says Iran’s top military commander.

Major General Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of staff of the Iranian armed forces, made the remarks during a meeting with his Iraqi counterpart, Abdel Emir Yarallah, in Baghdad on Sunday.

Bagheri hailed the “good stability and security” in the neighboring Arab country, which he said is moving in the direction of growth and development.

He said the Islamic Republic of Iran was the only country that came to Iraq’s aid against the Daesh terrorist group, describing top anti-terror commanders Qassem Soleimani and Abu Mahdi Al-Muhandis, who were assassinated by the US in 2020, as a “precious legacy” for the people of both countries.

“The two countries have good and valuable experiences in the war against terrorism and can share their experiences within a suitable plan,” said the top Iranian general.

Yarallah, for his part, expressed his gratitude to the Islamic Republic for its sincere cooperation in the fight against Daesh and commemorated Lieutenant General Soleimani.

He stated that the Iraqi armed forces are fully prepared for the development of military, defense, training exchanges and joint exercises and exchange of experiences with Iran.

Bagheri traveled to Iraq on Saturday for his first official visit to the Arab country. During his three-day visit, he will focus on cooperation on the fight against terrorism and regional developments, as well as defensive and bordering cooperation.
