The kit, produced by the Sanje Bio Diagnostic Company, is a significant breakthrough in the diagnosis of colorectal cancer, which is the third most deadly cancer worldwide, said the managing director of the company.
Hadi Baqeri revealed that the development of the kit began after sanctions led to the cessation of exports of a similar German product to Iran four years ago.
Before the production of this domestic test kit, diagnosing colorectal cancer was not only expensive but also painful, he said, adding that however, the new home-grown test kit, which utilizes nano-technology, has made the process more affordable and less distressing.
The innovation has received a patent from the United States, he said.
He also said that while the price of the kit was $15, the Iranian researchers have priced their domestically-produced kit at just $2, making it significantly more accessible.
