The top diplomat made the comment on Wednesday as he met UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir O. Pedersen in Geneva, Switzerland, with the two discussing the situation in the Arab country and the latest political developments there.
“The situation in Syria has become complicated due to US interference,” Amirabdollahian said, adding that tens of terrorist groups are still threatening security in Syria in the wake of Washington’s meddling.
He also referred to US-imposed sanctions on Syrian economy. Amirabdollahian said that the measures are actually an action against the Syrian people, and demanded UN officials help lift those sanctions.
The top Iranian diplomat also announced his country’s continued assistance to help resolve the issues Syria is facing. Additionally, he stressed the importance of supporting the Arab country to continue its fight against terrorism.
Pedersen briefed Amirabdollahian on his efforts and plans aimed at resolving the crisis in Syria which has been devastated by a years-long internal conflict aggravated by Western-backed terrorist groups.
Amirabdollahian met Pedersen following his separate discussions with other UN officials in Geneva earlier on Wednesday, with those negotiations focusing on the war in Gaza where Palestinians have been facing relentless Israeli attacks since October 7.
