‘Historic opportunity’ for region as war ends in South Caucasus: Iran

Tehran, IRNA - Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has said that the end of the conflict in the South Caucasus has presented a “historic opportunity” for the regional countries to work toward promoting peace and cooperation.

“We believe that today is a historic opportunity for all our countries. The war in the South Caucasus is now over and the time has come for peace, cooperation and development in the Caucasus,” Amirabdollahian said Monday while addressing the second 3+3 regional platform meeting on the South Caucasus.

Iran’s top diplomat said he was pleased that Tehran was hosting the second 3+3 regional meeting -- involving foreign ministers of the three South Caucasus countries of Armenia, Georgia, and Azerbaijan plus Russia, Turkey, and Iran -- and hoped for Georgia's effective participation in the future.

Amirabdollahian took the opportunity to express his deep concern about the significant humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza, where more than 5,000 Palestinians have been killed in incessant Israeli bombings since October 7, and about 1.4 million people have been displaced.

“What is happening in Gaza is a war crime committed by the Israeli regime against humanity,”

One of the central objectives of the 3+3 regional platform is to solve regional issues with the direct involvement of regional countries, without the interference of extra-regional actors.
