IRNA’s CEO warns of spread of fake news over Gaza war

Istanbul, IRNA – The CEO of IRNA and head of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies (OANA) has said that the leaders of certain countries are counting on the spread of fake news as a powerful tool over the Israeli war on Gaza.

Ali Naderi made the remarks at the opening ceremony of OANA’s meeting in Istanbul on Monday.

He cited the lies of Hamas cutting off the heads of 40 children in Israel and attacking a music concert in the occupied territories, as well as efforts to portray the Zionist regime as innocent in the terrible attack on a hospital in Gaza as examples of disinformation concerning the Israeli war on Gaza.

He asked OANA members to cooperate with each other to counter the spread of fake news, stressing that the cooperation will ultimately benefit nations.

“In this meeting, we want to examine and highlight the role of news agencies in the fight against fake news. We also want to evaluate the methods of cooperation between news agencies for this objective,” he noted.

Fahrettin Altun, the head of media and communications in the Turkish presidency, and Serdar Karagöz, the director general of Turkey’s Anadolu Agency, were the other speakers at the opening of the OANA Summit in Istanbul.

The 51st meeting of the executive and technical boards of OANA is being held in Istanbul from October 22 to 25.

The OANA was formed in 1961 on UNESCO’s initiative, with the aim of facilitating the spread of information among the countries of this region.

Currently, 44 news agencies from 35 countries in the Asia and Pacific region are members of OANA.
