Iran court sentences two journalists over role in 2022 riots

Tehran, IRNA – A court in the Iranian capital Tehran has issued sentences for two detained journalists, Niloufar Hamedi and Elaheh Mohammadi, who were found guilty on three charges after reviewing their cases regarding their involvement in last year's unrest in the country.

According to Iranian Judiciary's press service cited by the IRNA on Sunday, Branch 15 of the Tehran Revolutionary Court issued verdicts on these two journalists’ cases, following several hearing sessions and investigations, as well as the final defense made by the defendants and their lawyers.

Elaheh Mohammadi was sentenced to six years in prison for collaborating with the US hostile administration. The sentence includes five years of imprisonment for hatching plots and colluding to commit crimes against national security as well as one year behind bars for propagating against the Islamic Republic.

Niloufar Hamedi has also received a seven-year imprisonment sentence for teaming up with the US hostile administration. The verdict consists of five years in prison for conspiracy and collusion to commit crimes against national security as well as one year in jail for propagating against the country.

Moreover, both defendants were sentenced to be deprived of membership in political parties, groups, and factions, as well as activities in cyberspace, media outlets, and newspapers for two years as supplementary punishment under three articles of the Islamic Penal Code of 2013.

It is worth mentioning that the sentences can be revised in appeal and the periods that the defendants were in detention centers will be calculated to reduce their jail terms.
