Mural reminding British role in Persian famine erected in Tehran

Tehran, IRNA – Municipal authorities in the Iranian capital Tehran have erected a board in front of the United Kingdom’s embassy in Tehran to remind people of the role played by Britain in the Persian famine of 1917–1919.

The head of Tehran Beautification Organization, a subsidiary of the Municipality of Tehran, said on Tuesday that the relief mural installed at Tehran’s Jomhouri Square will be a testament to the crimes committed by states who occupied Iran during the World War I despite the country’s declaration of neutrality in the war.

“The British government caused the famine in Iran by hoarding food … They killed several million people and never apologized,” said Reza Sayyad.

Historic documents show some 2 million people died in Iran as a result of hunger and diseases during the Great War.
