Britain presses social media to remove content related to Hamas

London, IRNA – The British government is pressing social media platforms to remove content related to Palestinians’ resistance against the Zionist regime, in the latest show of support for the regime despite its ongoing brutalities against people in the blockaded Gaza Strip.

On Wednesday, British Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Technology Michelle Donelan shared a post on X, previously called Twitter, saying that she had demanded social media platforms take action against what she called “terrorism” by Hamas, the Palestinian resistance movement that launched a surprise offensive against Israeli positions on Saturday in response to the regime’s “crimes and desecration of holy sites including Al-Aqsa Mosque.”

“Today, I talked to platforms about how they can and must stop Hamas and supporters pushing wicked terrorism to the world. I’ve asked them to confirm in writing the actions they are taking,” the British official said.

In an earlier post Donelan shared on X Tuesday, she said she had called an “urgent meeting” with social media companies over the issue.

“I’ve called an urgent meeting with social media companies to ensure action is taken to swiftly remove any violent content fuelled by Hamas’ acts of terrorism in Israel from their platforms.”

Donelan said the British government is taking action to “stand in solidarity with Israel” and their “Jewish community.”

Britain meanwhile is seeking to outlaw protests by pro-Palestine groups and people there.

The country’s media on Tuesday reported that Home Secretary Suella Braverman had informed senior police officials that waving a Palestinian flag or singing a chant advocating freedom of Palestine from the Israeli occupation would be a criminal offense.

Braverman said waving a Palestinian flag may be deemed advocating Palestinian resistance group Hamas, which has been outlawed in Britain as a terrorist group.

Rights campaigners and Muslims in Britain have criticized the government for the way it has restricted freedom of speech about Palestine.
