Iran rejects explosion claims in Khorramabad, reports M2.5 quake

Khorramabad, IRNA – Seismic database manager of the Institute of Geophysics at the University of Tehran has dismissed claims that an explosion occurred in Iran’s western city of Khorramabad last night, saying the cause of the tremor felt by the residents was a 2.5 magnitude earthquake.

“The cause of the tremor last night in Khorramabad City was the occurrence of an earthquake with a magnitude of [2.5] on the Richter scale in this city,” Iraj Rouhi said on Tuesday.

“This earthquake occurred at a latitude of 33.462, a longitude of 48.506 and a shallow depth of eight kilometers,” he said.

He added that small earthquakes are not normally felt, but people feel them when they occur at a shallow depth.

At around 10:00 p.m. local time on Monday night, a loud noise was reported in some areas of Khorramabad along with a tremor, leading to speculations online about the cause.

Hostile media outlets, including the Times of Israel and Iran International, suggested that the incident could have been a successful operation by Israel’s Mossad spy agency, citing unreliable sources.

“Unofficial and unverified reports said the operation may have been conducted using attack drones,” The Times of Israel claimed.
