Hermit crabs, tiny scavengers of Iran's Kish Island

Hermit crabs, one of the ten-legged crustaceans known as decapods, are among the tiny creatures that inhabit the coral island of Kish. These crabs have a unique survival strategy; they scavenge empty shells of mollusks, primarily snails, to shield their delicate exoskeletons.

As they age and grow, hermit crabs switch their shells for larger ones. The waters of the Iranian islands in the Persian Gulf are home to 16 different species of hermit crabs.
