Iran has lowest rate of hepatitis spread in West Asia

Tehran, IRNA – Over 50% of Iranians have been vaccinated against the Hepatitis B virus (HBV), making Iran the country with the lowest hepatitis spread in the West Asia region, the head of the Iranian Association for the Study of Liver Disease (IASLD) has said.

Moayed Alavian said on Wednesday that Iranians aged up to 26 years old are rarely infected with HBV, which is a testament to successful efforts by Iran’s health system in recent years.

Alavian further stated that the World Health Organization aims to reduce new hepatitis infections by 90% and deaths by 65% between 2016 and 2030, adding that Iran has already reached these targets by carrying out a comprehensive national hepatitis B vaccination program.

Hepatitis is a condition characterized by inflammation of the liver.
