Following a meeting with Abdulaziz al-Khulaifi, a Qatari Foreign Ministry advisor, Ambassador Hamid Reza Dehghani said the prisoner exchange agreement with the US is in “its final stages of execution.”
He also expressed his gratitude for Qatar’s role in mediating and hosting the indirect talks with the United States.
“During this meeting, while reviewing the measures taken and the steps ahead, I expressed my appreciation and gratitude for his role in advancing bilateral relations, and particularly regarding the prisoner exchange agreement, which is in its final stages of execution,” Dehghani wrote on social media on Tuesday.
Last month, Iran and the United States reached an agreement for the exchange of prisoners between the two countries.
Under the agreement, five Iranian citizens detained in the US and five American prisoners in Iran will be swapped, and Iran’s assets blocked in South Korea due to US sanctions will be transferred into Qatari banks.
As a gesture of goodwill, Tehran on August 10 moved four American citizens detained in Iran from prison to house arrest. They joined a fifth prisoner, who was already under house arrest.
On Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani expressed optimism that the prisoner swap would take place “in the near future.”
Reports suggest that the prisoner exchange will also take place in Qatar.
