Alisjahbana, who serves as the executive secretary of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), made the comment during a meeting with Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian on Sunday, the final and second day of the First International Conference on Combating Sand and Dust Storms that was held in the capital Tehran.
During his opening speech at the conference on Saturday, President Raisi criticized developed countries for polluting the environment heedlessly and said that UN resolutions in this regard must be implemented by all nations. He also said that development without paying attention to the environment is a major cause of sand and dust storms affecting many countries today.
The UN official, during talks with Amirabdollahian, hailed Iran’s position and said that Raisi’s speech shows the country’s attention to international issues including protecting the environment.
The top Iranian diplomat, on his part said, cooperation among countries in different regions as well as across the world is key to eliminate hubs that produce dust.
Amirabdollahian noted said that, in addition to climate change, wars waged by extra-regional countries are also to blame for the ongoing dust storms, arguing that these countries have only pursued their own purposes without considering environmental issues.
