Di Maio held talks with Iran’s top diplomat at the Iranian Foreign Ministry on Sunday.
The Council of the European Union appointed Di Maio, a former Italian foreign minister, as its special representative (EUSR) for the Persian Gulf in May.
The position was created in late 2022 with the aim of further developing the strategic partnership between the EU and Persian Gulf countries.
