Addressing a presser at the international conference on sand and dust storms in Tehran on Tuesday, Stefan Priesner said that protecting wetlands, restoring lagoons, reviving dry lands, and confronting climate changes are among the issues of cooperation that the UN has had with Iran in the field of environment.
Iran, the UN, and some other countries have recently signed a document in the fields of sustainable development, he said, noting that the UN acknowledges and thanks Iran’s long and specialized history in the field of environment.
In response to the question by an IRNA correspondent about Iran’s inability to use global environmental facilities due to sanctions, he stated that the United Nations is following a multilateral discussion that would require multilateral cooperation on this issue, noting that the UN’s focus is on humanitarian and environmental issues which are common global issues.
The international conference on sand and dust storms is scheduled to take place in Tehran on September 9-10, when representatives from 50 countries and 15 international organizations, as well as a vast number of experts, university professors, and members of executive, research, and educational institutions, are to attend the event.
Earlier on the day, Chair of the National Committee to Combat Sand and Dust Storms of Iran’s Department of Environment Ali Mohammad Tahmasebi Birgani said that some 57 internationally recognized individuals have registered in the event, while the number of participants is expected to increase.
For years, the Islamic Republic has played an active role in combating desertification, dust, and sandstorms. Furthermore, Iran ranks as the fifth state that joined the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD).
