Speaking at a conference in Tehran on Tuesday, dubbed “Iran and BRICS: Prospects for Partnership and Cooperation”, Anil Sooklal said Iran has a strong civilization and stood by South Africa in its fight, which led to the country’s freedom.
He pointed out that the iconic South African anti-Apartheid leader Nelson Mandela traveled to Iran after his release from prison.
“BRICS was created for the sake of international cooperation, and we want to work for the Global South and the good of humanity. This has been one of the basic principles of BRICS,” he said.
He also said the group, which has a very high collective GDP rate, wants to make a great change in the world.
“When BRICS was created, we had ten percent of the world’s economy, but now there has been a change and BRICS is strengthening its cooperation,” the South African diplomat added.
The Iran-BRICS conference was held at the Institute for Political and International Studies (IPIS) of the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tehran on Tuesday. Officials from the ministry, as well as a group of foreign ambassadors residing in the Iranian capital, participated in the event which aims at identifying mutual capacities between the two sides.
