5,279 villages, 41 cities join Iran's natural gas grid under Raisi: Official

Tehran, IRNA- A total of 5,279 villages and 41 cities in Iran have been connected to the natural gas grid during the first two years of President Ebrahim Raisi’s administration, a senior energy official has revealed.

The figures amount to over 307,000 households in rural areas and more than 94,000 households in urban areas, Majid Chegeni, the head of the National Iranian Gas Company (NIGC), told reporters on Monday.

He explained that the uptick in infrastructure development in Iran's gas refineries has also translated into the expansion of the gas distribution network throughout the country.

Presently, a total 1,253 cities and 39,699 villages are benefiting from natural gas supply, accounting for 98.6% of the urban population and 86.3% of the rural population, Chegeni noted.

Breaking down the gas consumption patterns, the CEO of the state-run company said power generation utilizes approximately 75 billion cubic meters (bcm), or roughly 32%, of the total, while industries consume 71 bcm (31%).

In tandem, residential consumption accounts for 63 bcm (27%), public facilities and transportation each consume 9 bcm (4%), followed by the agricultural sector with a share of around 4.8 bcm (2%), he added.
