Venezuela's Maduro slams lack of response to Quran-burnings in Europe

Tehran, IRNA - Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has condemned the lack of response from European leaders and a number of media to Quran-burning incidents in Sweden and Denmark.

"I feel, deep within my heart, the discontent of Muslim peoples around the world when they see the Quran being burned," Maduro was quoted as saying by Russia's Sputnik news agency on Monday.

Those who turn a blind eye to the burning of sacred books in Europe are indirectly involved because of their silence, he added.

The Venezuelan president also criticized the media for not covering the incidents related to desecration of holy Quran.

He also strongly condemned hate crimes against Muslims and the activities of extreme right-wing and racist circles destroying copies of the Quran in Europe.

Far-right Islamophobes burned copies of the Quran in front of the Egyptian and Turkish embassies in Copenhagen last week, marking yet another anti-Islam act in Denmark.

Meanwhile, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen denounced the acts of desecration of the holy book, saying those who committed the act did not represent Danish society or values.

The desecrations of the Quran in Denmark come after similar acts in neighboring Sweden, which caused an international outcry and prompted the governments of Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE, and Lebanon to slam the burnings and downgrade their ties with Stockholm.
