Banning Quran burning would not limit freedom of expression: Danish PM

Tehran, IRNA – Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen says a potential ban on burning the holy Quran would not limit freedom of expression.

“It is not a slippery slope,” Frederiksen said in an interview published Thursday, speaking out for the first time on setting fire to the holy Muslim book in her country.

“I don’t consider it a restriction on freedom of expression that you can’t burn other people’s books,” she told Politico.

She also warned that there is a “concrete security risk” as well as “a risk that we will become isolated on the international stage.”

Last week, far-right Islamophobes burned copies of the Quran in front of the Egyptian and Turkish embassies in Copenhagen, marking yet another anti-Islam act in Denmark.

On Sunday, Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen denounced the acts of desecration of the holy book, saying those who committed the act did not represent Danish society or values.

The desecrations of the Quran in Denmark come after similar acts in neighboring Sweden, which have caused an international outcry and prompted the governments of Iran, Iraq, Jordan, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, the UAE and Lebanon to either slam the burnings or suspend certain ties with Stockholm.
