Tehran, IRNA - Iranian and Belarusian defense ministers in a meeting in Tehran on Monday have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation.

The meeting, held at the headquarters of the Iranian Ministry of Defense on Monday, facilitated an exchange of views on matters of mutual interest and culminated in the signing of the defense cooperation agreement between the two sides.

Iranian Defense Minister Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani emphasized the convergence of perspectives between Iran and Belarus on various regional and international issues, stating that “Belarus holds a special place in Iran’s foreign policy".

He underscored the importance of defense cooperation and said leveraging the capabilities of Iran and Belarus would foster peace, stability, and security in the region.

In the context of the crisis in Ukraine, the Iranian defense minister voiced support for any diplomatic effort aimed at achieving a peaceful resolution.

He, however, expressed concern over NATO's eastward expansion without any consideration for the concerns of other regional countries.

In response, Belarusian Defense Minister General Viktor Gennadievich Khrenin said he hoped his visit to Iran would help strengthen bilateral ties and achieve common objectives.

The Belarusian minister also emphasized the potential for direct and indirect collaboration between the defense ministries of both nations, with a focus on enhancing various aspects of military and defense cooperation.
