Iran naval forces receive dozens of cruise missiles

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian naval forces have received dozens of new long-range cruise missiles, named after Iraqi anti-terror commander Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, who was assassinated along with Iran’s iconic commander Qassem Soleimani in a US drone strike in Baghdad in 2020.

The Iranian Navy and the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) Navy took delivery of the “Abu Mahdi” cruise missiles in a ceremony attended by senior commanders on Tuesday.

The Abu Mahdi cruise missile, with a range of over 1,000 kilometers, has been produced by the Aerospace Industries Organization of Iran’s Defense Ministry.

It can destroy mobile naval targets and is capable of covering a wide range of operations while streaking at low altitudes to evade enemy radars

The cruise missile is able to destroy all types of ships, frigates and destroyers thanks to its high destructive power and the explosives in its warhead.

Abu Mahdi is the first long-range cruise missile that uses artificial intelligence to plan its flight path and has the ability to pass over natural and artificial obstacles as well as the enemy’s radar and defense systems.

Speaking at the ceremony, Defense Minister Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Ashtiani said the new missile will expand the area that can be protected by Iran’s defense systems several times compared to the past.

“In line with the defense doctrine of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the improvement of its missile and defense power, we are witnessing today the joining ceremony of the long-range Abu Mahdi cruise [missile], which is a strategic system that we can call unparalleled,” he said.

Rear Admiral Alireza Tangsiri, the commander of the IRGC Navy, also addressed the ceremony, saying the cruise missile will in practice disable the enemy’s warplanes which are carried by aircraft carriers within the range of the missile.

“One of the things that this missile can do is to repel the enemy, and it can drive the enemy away from our coasts,” he added.
