‘US must steer clear of Armenia-Azerbaijan peace process’

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi says that peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan should steer clear of intervention by the United States and the Zionist regime.

Raisi made the remarks in a meeting on Monday with visiting Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, according to a statement by Raisi’s top political advisor Mohammad Jamshidi.

Jamshidi said on his social media account that President Raisi had offered his support for peace talks between Armenia and Azerbaijan to settle their differences three years after a war between the two countries ended with a ceasefire.

“These negotiations have to be carried out based on the interests of the nations and without political conspiracies involving America and the Zionist regime,” the Iranian president was quoted as saying by Jamshidi.

A later report from Iranian Presidency office said Raisi had declared in the meeting with Mirzoyan that Iran will not accept any changes to the geopolitical borders of the South Caucasus as a result of the ongoing peace process in the region.

He also said that Iran sees no limit to the expansion of its relations with Armenia.

Mirzoyan, for his part, said his country appreciates Iran’s stances toward developments in the Caucasus region.

He ensured Raisi that Armenia will never be turned into a platform for anti-Iran actions by regional and extra-regional forces.

Mirzoyan arrived in Tehran earlier on Monday for talks with senior Iranian officials, including with Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian.
