Tehran, IRNA – The following headlines appeared in English-language newspapers in the Iranian capital on Sunday, July 16, 2023.

** IRAN DAILY 

-- Iran’s grain production expected to exceed 20m tons: FAO

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in its latest report entitled “Prospects of Crops and Food Situation” predicted the total production volume of Iran’s grains in the current Crop Year to reach 20.6 million tons.
Iran produced 20.6 million tons of grains in 2022 and according to FAO prediction, will produce the same amount in 2023, the report added.

-- India envoy: Chabahar a golden opportunity for New Delhi

India’s Ambassador to Tehran Rudra Gaurav Shresth said Iran’s southeastern Chabahar port is a golden opportunity for India to expand its economic ties. “Chabahar’s position in the expansion of trade exchanges in the Middle East, Eurasia, and even Europe is unique,” Shresth said during his visit to the port on Friday.
“We planned this trip to visit the port’s infrastructure and implement our investment commitments,” the ambassador maintained. The official called on the members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) to take the necessary measures for using the capacities of the Chabahar port.

--  Iran targets $3b in annual trade with Africa: Official

The Iranian government aims to reach a minimum of $3 billion in annual trade with Africa by 2025, said an Iranian official. Alireza Peyman-Pak, the deputy minister of Agriculture, made the remarks in an interview with the Iran Economy newspaper, which was published on Saturday.
He pointed to the recent visit of Iranian President Ebrahim Raeisi to Kenya, Uganda, and Zimbabwe and said the visit to Africa will have a positive impact on bilateral relations, especially in economic fields.
Peyman-Pak, who is the former head of the Trade Promotion Organization, noted that under previous governments, Iran’s annual trade with Africa was less than $500 million, but the current administration has successfully increased it to $1.2 billion.

-- IME Weekly Trade Tops $652mn

The Iran Mercantile Exchange (IME) on Saturday reported that over 2,658,800 tonnes of commodities with a total value of $652 million were traded on its domestic and exporting halls in the last week.
The IME’s report said that on metal and mineral trading floor trade, over 2,094,221 tonnes of commodities, including 1,143,335 tonnes of cement, 614,000 tonnes of iron ore, 201,211 tonnes of steel, 142,100 tonnes of sponge iron, 15,631 tonnes of copper, 6,615 tonnes of aluminum, 1,210 tonnes of zinc, 210 tonnes of molybdenum concentrate and 75 tonnes of precious metals concentrate with total value of $396 million were traded in its markets in the last week.

--  Envoy: China Backs Iran’s Bid to Join BRICS

 The Chinese ambassador to Tehran, Chang Hua, stressed China’s support for Iran’s desire to become a member of the BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) group.
“China maintains positive relationships with all countries in the region. Last year, Chinese President Xi Jinping visited Saudi Arabia, and earlier this year, Iran’s president also visited China,” Chang Hua told ISNA news agency, speaking about China’s role in addressing regional matters, such as the recent restoration of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia.

--  Trade Exchange Between Iran and Uzbekistan Grows 24%

 Iran and Uzbekistan have witnessed a 24% increase in their trade exchange during the first five months of the current year compared to the same period in the previous year, an Uzbek committee has announced.
The State Committee of the Republic of Uzbekistan on Statistics has said that the trade between the two countries reached $227 million in the period.

--  Iran criticizes Israel for using ‘iron fist’ to suppress protesters

- Unmasked Zionist tyrants have come under censure from Iran for using an “iron fist” to suppress demonstrators who wanted to oppose Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s regime.

Nasser Kanaani, the spokesperson for Iran’s Foreign Ministry, said on Friday that “the occupying and criminal Zionists tried for many years to portray their fake regime as the most democratic entity in West Asia.”

But the oppressive Zionist leaders are now controlling the unrest with an “iron fist,” Kanaani said. 

--  Havva intl. film festival announces winners

Winners of different sections of the first edition of Iran’s Havva International Film Festival were announced on Friday during a special ceremony at Tehran’s Vahdat Hall.

They received their awards from the Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance Mohammad-Mehdi Esmaeili and his colleagues. In the international section of the festival, “In the Arms of the Tree” by Iranian director Babak Khajepasha was named best film. 

--  Iran ranks 11th in International Mathematical Olympiad

 Iranian students took six medals, ranking 11th at the 64th International Mathematical Olympiad which was held in Japan on July 2-13.

A gold medal from Ehsan Heidari, four silver medals from Sobhan Aram, Mohammad-Parsa Jafarnejadi, Arvin Taheri, and Mohammad-Ermia Qaseri, and a bronze medal from Pouria Rahmani placed the country 11th among 111 participating countries, ISNA reported. 

According to the International Mathematical Olympiad rules, approximately 1/12 of the participants receive a gold medal, 2/12 receive a silver medal, and 3/12 receive a bronze medal.
