Assyrians honor saints in long-held tradition in Iran's Urmia

Urmia, IRNA – A major in the northwestern Iranian city of Urmia has hosted a thousand-year ritual of honoring the saints of the churches with the presence of Assyrian Iranians.

The religious ceremony honoring the saints of the churches, a ceremony called “Shanader”, was held late on Sunday in Urmia's Mar Daniel Church.

Assyrian Iranians attended the ceremony in Adeh Bozorg Village near Urmia to pay their respect to the status of the saint, and to observe their annual rituals and traditions such as lighting candles and sacrificing livestock.

Each year, many Assyrians who have emigrated to other countries travel to Urmia to attend the ceremony which is held to commemorate the death and martyrdom of the saints of the churches who lost their lives to spread the religion.

The ceremony is also held simultaneously in Iraq, Lebanon, Syria, Turkey, and all the countries that have adherents to the East Assyrian Church.
