--  BRICS currency will benefit Iran, weaken US dollar: Senior diplomat

A senior Iranian diplomat has hailed a plan by the BRICS member states to introduce a common currency in their international trade, emphasizing that the move will prove beneficial to Iran and challenge the dominance of the US dollar and the euro.
“A tremendous change is taking place in the international economy,” said the Head of the Iranian Foreign Ministry’s South Asia Office Rasoul Mousavi in a post on his social media account on Sunday.

--  Iranian girls seal place in world junior handball meet

Iran secured a place in next year’s IHF Women’s Junior Handball World Championship thanks to a fifth-spot finish in the Asian U20 Championship in Hong Kong. Iranian girls defeated Kazakhstan 27-24 on Saturday to celebrate a second successive qualification for the world event – hosted by North Macedonia next summer.
Fatemeh Merikhi bagged a game-high eight goals for Iran, followed by Ma’edeh Oshaqi and Nastaran Koudzari-Farahani, who scored seven and five respectively.

--  Minister calls on Pakistan to tighten border security

The Iranian Minister of Interior described the Saturday incident at the Zahedan police station as a terrorist act and urged “the neighboring government” – Pakistan – to bolster border security measures and exercise effective control over the borders.
On Saturday, the Pakistan-based Jeish-ul-Adl group claimed responsibility for the attack on the police station, triggering deadly clashes with the officers, during which two policemen and four gunmen were killed.

-- Funeral Held for Martyrs of Terrorist Attack in Zahedan

A funeral procession was held in Zahedan in southeast Iran on Sunday for two security forces martyred in a terrorist attack on a police station in the city a day earlier.
Four assailants attempted to make their way into the police station in Zahedan, the capital of Sistan and Baluchestan province, but were confronted by the forces inside on Saturday.
All the four terrorists were ultimately killed. Two security forces also lost their lives.

--  Iranian Woman Wins Bronze at U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships

 Hediye Kheirabadi of Iran made history by claiming a bronze medal at the 2023 ICF Junior and U23 Canoe Sprint World Championships in Auronzo, Italy. Iran’s Kheirabadi won the bronze in the women’s C1 U23 5,000m race with a time of 25:31.17 minutes.
She competed with opponents from Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Moldova, Hungary, Uzbekistan, Spain, the U.S., Canada and Italy. The gold and silver medals went to Kazakhstan and Moldova athletes, respectively.

-- Afghan, Iranian Firms Ink MoU for Constructing Three Piers at Caspian Port

 A memorandum of understanding (MoU) was signed between an Iranian and an Afghan company for $50 million worth of investment by the Afghan firm at the Caspian Port of Anzali aimed at building three piers.
The MoU was inked in the presence of Secretary of the Supreme Council of Free and Special Economic Zones Hojjatollah Abdolmaleki. Under the MoU, the company from Afghanistan will invest $50 million in the construction of three piers at the Caspian Port Complex in cooprartion with a domestic company as a Joint Venture (JV).

--  Iran suffer 10th loss in 2023 VNL

 Iran lost to Cuba 3-2 (25-22, 26-28, 25-23, 28-30, 15-10) in the 2023 Volleyball Nations League (VNL) Week 3 in Anaheim, the U.S. early Monday. Jesus Herrera Jaime from Cuba scored 28 points and Iran’s Bardia Saadat earned 17 points.

It was Iran’s 10th defeat in 12 matches in 2023 VNL. Iran lost to Japan, Poland, Slovenia, Italy, the Netherlands, the U.S., France, Bulgaria, Argentina and Cuba and defeated China and Germany.

---  “Empty Nets” wins award at Karlovy Vary festival 

“Empty Nets”, an Iran-Germany co-production directed by Iranian filmmaker Behrouz Karamizadeh, won the special jury award of the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival in Czech, the organizers announced on Saturday.

The award-winning film also received a cash prize of $15,000, which will be equally divided between the director and producer of the film. “Empty Nets” tells the story of Amir and Narges, who have found genuine love in their coastal hometown near the Caspian Sea. However, in modern Iran, it is difficult to build a future as a couple, and they have to hide their love from society.

--  FAO recognizes new Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System in Iran

 The Estahban Rainfed Fig Orchards Heritage System, located in Iran’s southern Fars province, has been formally recognized as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System (GIAHS), by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

During a meeting of the GIAHS Scientific Advisory Group that took place in Valencia, Spain, from July 4-7, FAO designated three new GIAHS sites in Asia, underlining the importance of the continent’s centuries-old agricultural practices in feeding the world’s growing population and combating climate change and biodiversity loss.
