Iran, Sudan FMs meet after 7-year hiatus

Tehran, IRNA- Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has met with his Sudanese counterpart, Ali Al-Sadiq, in Azerbaijan, for the first time in seven years.

The meeting was held on Thursday on the sidelines of a ministerial summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Baku.

Amirabdollahian and Al-Sadiq focused their discussions on resolving lingering misunderstandings between the Islamic Republic of Iran and Sudan.

They also discussed ways to strengthen the political and economic relations between Tehran and Khartoum.

Back in 2016, Sudan quickly followed Saudi Arabia in cutting diplomatic relations with Iran following a row over the execution by Riyadh of prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr Baqir al-Nimr.

Iran and Saudi Arabia restored their diplomatic relations in March under a rapprochement deal brokered by China.

Also on Thursday, Amirabdollahian met with Belarusian Foreign Minister Sergei Aleinik on the sidelines of the summit in Baku. They exchanged views on matters of bilateral interest and regional issues.

Iran’s top diplomat has also held discussions with the foreign ministers of Kuwait, Malaysia, Syria, and Iraq on the sidelines of the NAM summit.
