Iran to keep pursuing case of diplomats abducted in Lebanon in 1982: Ministry

Tehran, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Ministry has issued a statement on the 41st anniversary of the abduction of four Iranian diplomats in Beirut, Lebanon, saying it will pursue the case to determine their fate.

In the statement issued on Wednesday, Iran once again reiterated that the Zionist regime of Israel is ultimately responsible for the abduction of Ahmad Motovasselian, Mohsen Mousavi, Taqi Rastegar Moqaddam and Kazem Akhavan who were respectively a military attaché at Iran’s embassy in Beirut, Iranian chargé d'affaires in Lebanon, a staff of the embassy and a photographer at the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), when they were abducted in Lebanon in 1982.

It said that as the abductions had occurred in Lebanon and the country was occupied by the Zionist regime at that time, the occupying forces were responsible for security and protecting the people’s lives and properties according to the Geneva 1949 Convention.

Expressing sympathy with the families of the abducted, the Iranian Foreign Ministry stressed that the issue has been under investigation during the past four decades.

Unfortunately, the efforts has remained fruitless till now due to the irresponsibility of the Zionist regime and those who were involved in the incident, according to the statement.

Also, it added, many documents and testimonies related to the case have been destroyed over the years mainly because international organizations have not taken practical measures to pursue the case.

The Foreign Ministry statement urged international organizations and human rights bodies to accept their legal responsibility with regards to the issue and hold the Zionist regime accountable for the fate of the Iranian diplomats.

It said that Iran also expects the Lebanese government to take effective political measures inside and outside of the country to help settle the issue.
