A knife-wielding assailant had illegally entered the Iranian embassy in Denmark in October 2022, wounding one of the embassy's local staff members, damaged some cars at the embassy, and attempted to stab the Iranian ambassador Afsaneh Nadipour before he was thwarted by an official of the embassy, according to a Saturday report by the IRNA.
According to the Danish prosecutor's statement which was released on Friday, the assailant was then placed in detention by the Copenhagen police and has been kept in custody since then.
He has been receiving psychological therapy for a long time, according to the statement.
Based on Denmark’s laws, the punishment for crimes committed against diplomats or foreign legations is twice as severe as the ones carried out against ordinary civilians, said the statement, adding that it is unacceptable that a foreign diplomat not be able to perform his/her duties without fear of physical attack.
After the incident, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian held a telephone call with Nadipour.
“It is regrettable that such an assault targets a lady, who is an ambassador with diplomatic immunity, at the heart of Europe and that the police fail to arrive at the scene on time,” the Iranian Foreign Ministry quoted Amirabdollahian as saying in the phone conversation.
In the related development, the office of the Iranian Foreign Ministry summoned the Danish ambassador to Tehran to protest against the attack and remind the country about the Vienna Convention which stipulates that the immunity of diplomats must be protected.
