The UN secretary general presented his report on the situation of human rights in Iran on Wednesday at the 53rd session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.
According to a statement by the UN deputy high commissioner for human rights, the report “focuses on developments since the onset of nationwide protests following the death of 22-year-old Jina Mahsa Amini on September 16, 2022”, citing “a worsening human rights situation” in the Islamic Republic.
Speaking at the Wednesday session of the HRC, the Iranian envoy rejected that report as imbalanced and biased, saying that it has been prepared using “anti-Iran individuals, sources, media outlets and movements” and levels accusations that are rejected.
Moreover, he added, the report has been prepared based on a UN General Assembly resolution which was approved “based on political, biased and unfair motives and goals.”
That resolution itself was backed by Western states which are the main violators of the rights of the Iranian people, Bahreini noted, stressing that such a resolution is not aimed at helping promote human rights, and that such reports by the UN chief are not necessary, professional and logical either.
The Iranian envoy also criticized the report for turning a blind eye to unilateral sanctions in place against the Iranian nation, saying that these measures amount to crimes against humanity and violate international law as well as the rights of the Iranian people.
Bahreini said that the report meanwhile ignores great achievements by the Islamic Republic regarding human rights. Yet, he added, the country will continue to cooperate with the UN to improve the human rights situation despite all the accusations leveled against it in the latest report.
