Spokesman elaborates on objectives of Iranian FM’s regional tour

Tehran, IRNA - Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani has said Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian’s regional tour that has so far taken him to Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait was undertaken to follow up on cooperation agreements Tehran has previously signed with the Persian Gulf countries.

“The authorities of these nations have previously signed significant documents during past visits, and the execution of these agreements has been the subject of considerable attention and importance,” Kanaani, who is accompanying Amirabdollahian on his trip to Kuwait, told reporters on Wednesday.

“It was agreed upon to review and implement the signed documents,” he added, while elaborating on the reasons behind the top diplomat’s tour of the three littoral states of the Persian Gulf.

Kanaani said establishment of joint economic commissions dominated the talks in Qatar and Oman, with a commitment by all sides to speed up the process.

The issues of transit and transportation within the framework of the North-South and East-West corridors were also highlighted, he noted.

Additionally, maritime cooperation was another issue that Amirabdollahian discussed with officials in Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait, with a focus on activation of ports and using maritime capacities to boost cargo transit, Kanaani said.

“Important objectives” were also set to enhance transit between Iran and the three Persian Gulf nations within the framework of the Ashgabat agreement, he added.

Iran’s top diplomat also discussed ways to increase banking and customs cooperation with his counterparts from Qatar and Oman, the spokesman said.

Kanaani further pointed out that the resumption of diplomatic relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia has had “a positive impact on the regional environment,” as evident by the “warm reception” the Iranian delegation received in their host countries.

“They acknowledged that this progress not only transforms bilateral relations but also creates a favorable ground for regional convergence based on common interests,” he said.

Furthermore, Kanaani announced that Amirabdollahian was visiting the United Arab Emirates (UAE) as the next destination of his regional tour.
