Iran fell short of expectations against hosts in the final match of the WAFF tournament in Baghdad and lost 5-4 against the hosts in penalty shootouts, according to a late Tuesday report by the IRNA.
Iran defeated Syria and shared the spoils with Palestine in a draw to top the Group B of the competition before beating Jordan in penalties to advance to the final.
Reza Enayati’s men took on Iraq at Al-Madina International Stadium where the two side drew 1-1 at the end of the match.
Nine teams competed with each other in three groups in this year's WAFF U-23 Championship tournament.
