Brazil's Lula concerned over 'imminent extradition' of Assange to US

Tehran, IRNA – The Brazilian president has censured the detention of Julian Assange, the WikiLeaks co-founder, in the UK, saying his arrest and plans to extradite him to the United States should be viewed as an assault on democracy and freedom of the media.

Such an arrest “goes against the defense of democracy and freedom of the press,” Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on his Twitter page on Saturday (June 10), according to RT, a Russian TV network.

Lula said he is concerned about the seemingly “imminent extradition” of Assange to the United States.

Further, he called for “mobilization” to defend the WikiLeaks co-founder.

Ecuador refused to extend Assange’s asylum status in April 2019, allowing the British police to arrest him after he left the Ecuadorian embassy in London.

The US Department of Justice has brought 17 charges against Assange based on which the media activist could be imprisoned for 175 years.

Reporters Without Borders (RSF) has indicated that ab appeal planned for next week will be Assange’s last opportunity to fight extradition in the UK, adding that a last chance for Assange would be bring his case to the European Court of Human Rights, the RT report said.
