Bostanabad-Tabriz railway; linking route to Europe

Tehran, IRNA – Iran's Construction and Develeopment of Transportation Infrastructures Company has announced that Bostanabad-Tabriz railway is regarded as a linking railway route to Europe.

The Bostanabad-Tabriz railway and the Khavaran station were inaugurated on Friday on the second day of President Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to East Azarbaijan Province.

The connection of the Tabriz railway to the Nakhchivan, Yerevan and Tbilisi railways through Jolfa and other land and water borders will continue to increase international exchanges and the export of goods to the Republic of Azerbaijan, Armenia and Turkey.

The network links Iran to Azerbaijan's Nakhchivan, Yerevan, and Tbilisi railways through Jolfa and aims to increase trade volume between the Islamic Republic and Azerbaijan, Armenia, and Turkey.

The increase in transit capacity, which is equivalent to 7 million tons of cargo and 2 million passengers per year, is one of the other advantages of this rail project.

Located in northwest Iran, the Bostanabad-Tabriz railway is the second phase of the broader Mianeh-Tabriz railway project and has a length of 44 kilometers.

The first train also officially departed the Khavaran station toward Tehran on Friday morning, three days after train tickets were sold out.

The 205-kilometer Mianeh-Bostanabad-Tabriz railway project was launched 23 years ago. It has 9 stations in 11 sections, 11 tunnels with a length of 6,583 meters, and 47 large bridges with a length of 7,623 meters.

The double-track railway is a major part of the country’s East-West transport corridor and is expected to increase the share of Iran in international transport.
