China supports Iran’s push to form regional naval alliance

Tehran, IRNA – China says it supports a regional push by Iran, Saudi Arabia, and others to establish a naval alliance to safeguard the security of the crucial Persian Gulf region.

Upholding the peace and stability of the Persian Gulf region in the Middle East bears on the well-being of countries and people in the region and is of vital importance to safeguarding world peace, boosting global economic growth and keeping energy supply stable, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin told reporters on Monday.

“China supports regional countries in resolving disputes and cultivating good neighborliness and friendship through dialogue and consultation,” he said when asked about an announcement by Iran’s Navy commander that regional navies would soon join forces to form an alliance.

Rear Admiral Shahram Irani said Friday that the new naval coalition to be established by Iran, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, and Iraq would also include India and Pakistan.

“As a good friend to regional countries, China will continue to play a positive and constructive role in promoting regional peace and stability,” the Chinese spokesman said.

China helped broker a deal in March that saw Iran and Saudi Arabia restore their diplomatic relations after a seven-year rupture.

The historic deal has been touted by both sites as holding huge potential for the promotion of peace and security in the region.
