Iran main actor in regional developments: FM

Tehran, IRNA – Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian has said that the Islamic Republic is undoubtedly "the main actor" when it comes to developments in West Asia region.

The top Iranian diplomat said in an interview published by IRNA on Thursday that the Islamic Republic is also a main actor in global developments, and has a presence in the new global order wherever there is an important issue.

Amirabdollahian made the comments in the interview in which he elaborated on his ministry’s measures and achievements over the past months and its plans in line with the current Iranian administration’s policy to pursue active diplomacy.

The top diplomat referred to a ten-day gathering of Iran’s political and consular representatives in other countries that wrapped up on Wednesday (May 31) in Tehran, saying that the emergence of a new international order was the main topic of the gathering, with participants discussing the role the Islamic Republic plays in this regard.

According to Iran's foreign minister, the gathering also focused on ways to identify opportunities and threats, as well as necessary measures in the new world order.

“Undoubtedly, Iran is the main actor and power in regional developments, and is among main actors at the world level as well,” he said, adding that Iran has a presence wherever an issue or phenomenon is discussed in the new world order.

Iran’s SCO membership to be finalized soon

Elsewhere in the interview, Amirabdollahian said that Iran’s official membership at the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) will be finalized in the next few weeks. He said that will take place following the approval of Iran’s full membership by Kyrgyzstan’s parliament that was the last legislative body of the main eight members of the SCO to give the approval.

Sultan of Oman’s trip to Iran

The top diplomat also spoke about the latest trip to Iran by Oman’s Sultan Haitham bin Tarik Al Said that took place on May 28-29. Amirabdollahian said that the trip was in response to a last year visit by President Ebrahim Raisi to Oman, adding that the two sides are determined to further expand relations as they have been satisfied with the quick implementation of their previous agreements.

Dispute with Afghanistan

According to Amirabdollahian, Taliban rulers have made it clear that the recent sporadic clashes at the border between Iran and Afghanistan have not taken place based on a pre-determined plan.

He said Tehran will continue to deal with the ongoing dispute with Afghanistan over Iran’s right to use its share of the Helmand (Hirmand) River, adding that Iran will pursue the issue both politically and legally.
