UAE stops taking part in US-led operations in Persian Gulf : Report

Tehran, IRNA –The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced that it will no longer take part in operations by a US-led task force allegedly protecting Persian Gulf shipping, news outlets have reported.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the UAE was responded to a Wall Street Journal report about the decision a day earlier by saying that the report was a "mis-characterization" of conversations between the two countries, according to a report by Reuters.

But it said it had stopped taking part in the Combined Maritime Forces, headquartered at the US naval base in Bahrain, since two months ago.

It said, however, that the UAE is committed to dialogue and diplomatic engagement to advance regional security and stability and to ensuring navigation safety in its seas in accordance with international law.

It comes after the US Navy issued a statement in early May claimed that Iran had seized a Panamanian-flagged oil tanker named “Niovi” while passing through the Strait of Hormuz.

The statement said the tanker had left Dubai for Fujairah Port of UAE.

Meanwhile, Tehran's Public and Revolution Prosecutor's office announced that the Niovi oil tanker had been seized because of a private complaint and a subsequent order by relevant judicial authorities.
