In an open session of the parliament on Tuesday, lawmakers cast 167 votes in favor and 86 against Sahraee's appointment as education minister, while 14 lawmakers were undecided and two votes were dismissed.
“Mr. Sahraee himself has recognized the biggest challenge of the Ministry of Education as the need to change the management and governance in this ministry,” Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf said after the votes were counted.
“This problem has persisted for various reasons in the last two decades. We have many challenges in this field, especially because of the changes that have been made at the head of the administration of this ministry,” he added.
Sahraee has served as caretaker education minister since April, when the former minister, Yousef Noori, was voted out by the parliament after a delay in the payment of teachers’ salaries caused public outcry.
He has a Ph.D. in linguistics from Allameh Tabatabai University and is a full professor of linguistics at the same university. He was appointed as the head of Farhangian University in May 2022.
