The visit by Sultan of Oman Haitham bin Tariq Al Said to Iran, planned for later on Sunday, is different from trips made by other foreign officials to the Islamic Republic, as bilateral talks between Omani and Iranian officials have always attracted a great deal of attention.
The emphasis of Al Said’s visit to Iran is two-folded as it will both concentrate on Muscat’s role in mediating disputes between Tehran and other countries as well as on bolstering bilateral relations between Tehran and Muscat.
The Omani Sultan was hosted by President of Egypt Abdel Fattah al-Sisi a few days before his visit to Tehran, and the trip raised speculations about Muscat’s decision to open a new round of mediation efforts between Cairo and Tehran.
Experts believe that Egypt and maybe Bahrain will be the two countries that could soon resolve their disputes with Iran.
However, bilateral ties between Oman and Iran could be the main point in Sultan’s official visit to Tehran as the two sides seek to boost their economic and trade relations.
Official figures show there has been a major increase in the volume of trade exchanges between the two friendly nations.
Trade between Iran and Oman reached its highest level in the history of economic ties between the two countries last year.
The value of mutual trade interactions between the two states reached $1.8 billion in 2022, up from $221 million reported in 2013 and an increase of 41% compared to 2021.
Moreover, Iran’s exports to Oman increased from $146 million in 2013 to $1.1 billion in 2022, and the Islamic Republic’s imports from the Arab country also experienced an increase from $75 million in 2013 to $800 million in 2022.
