Saffar-Moqaddam's funeral was held in his hometown of Neyshabur in eastern Iran on Thursday.
He spent several decades teaching Farsi to non-Persian speakers and wrote four textbooks and a book on how to teach spoken Farsi.
The notable figure was a member of the scientific council of the Saadi Foundation, an Iranian organization responsible for spreading Farsi around the world.
Iran's acting education minister Reza-Morad Sahraei expressed his condolences on the death of Saffar-Moqaddam.
In a message issued on Friday, the acting minister said that Saffar-Moqaddam had played a major role in the promotion of the Persian language around the world.
