Mehrabian said on Tuesday that the government has set out serious plans to reclaim Iran’s water rights from the Helmand and will pursue the plans until its rights are fully preserved.
“Regarding the special order of the president to sort out the water issue in the east of the country, a meeting was held yesterday with the presence of the relevant (government) departments,” he explained.
He added that during the meeting, various aspects of resolving the issue were discussed and decisions were made in order to protect Iran’s rights.
According to the reports presented in the meeting, the ruling Taliban group in Afghanistan has pledged to implement the 1973 Helmand Treaty and deliver Iran’s water rights.
Under the treaty, Iran is entitled to receive an annual share of 820 million cubic meters of water from Helmand, but Afghanistan has largely cut off the river’s flow into Iran, endangering the lives of many people in Iran's southeast.
