“Ferdowsi's deep thinking and free spirit, along with his desire to awaken Iranians and create unity and solidarity among them, led him to sacrifice his wealth and livelihood in order to create a timeless masterpiece of the Persian language and culture,” the president said in a statement on Sunday to mark the National Day of Ferdowsi.
Ferdowsi (940 – 1020 AD) is considered one of the greatest Persian poets of all time. His literary masterpiece Shahnameh, the Epic of Kings, has stood the test of time and has remained a source of inspiration for generations.
Raisi said Ferdowsi drew his literary inspiration from his faith.
“Ferdowsi's faith in Islam is evident in his admiration for the great Prophet of Islam, as well as in the numerous couplets in his epic poem Shahnameh that he dedicated to the Prophet and his pure household,” the president noted.
Iranians commemorate Ferdowsi's great contribution to their nation's history, language, and culture, on May 15 each year, designated as the National Day of Ferdowsi.
