UAE invites Syria's Assad to attend climate summit in Dubai

Tehran, IRNA – Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has been invited by the United Arab Emirates to attend the Conference of the Parties (COP 28) climate summit in Dubai.

In a tweet on Sunday, the UAE embassy in Damascus announced that Abdul Hakeem Al-Nuaimi, the Emirati chargé d'affaires in Syria, had met with President Assad to give him an invitation from UAE President Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan to attend the climate summit planned for November-December 2023.

Last week, the two Arab leaders had a phone conversation in which they discussed bilateral relations and ways to further develop them.

It came after the Arab League readmitted Syria after more than a decade of suspension. All 13 of the 22 member states present in the Arab League's May 7 ministerial session endorsed the decision.

Major Arab countries have been trying to restore their diplomatic relations with Syria more than a decade after they cut ties with Damascus and supported militants trying to overthrow the government of Bashar al-Assad.

President Assad has already visited the UAE and Oman this year. He is expected to visit other Arab countries as well in the near future.
