Despite sanctions, Iran has world's largest oil pipeline building program

Tehran, IRNA – Iran has ranked first in the world in terms of under-construction oil transmission pipelines despite the harsh regime of sanctions imposed by the US on the country's energy sector.

According to a report released by Global Energy Monitor last Monday, 1,978 kilometers of oil pipelines are being constructed in Iran, which is higher than India, Niger, and Canada.

There are 9,100 kilometers of oil transmission pipelines under construction in the world and an additional 21,900 kilometers of pipelines planned for construction.

The leading five countries in terms of in-development pipelines – both planned and under construction – are the US, India, Iraq, Iran, and Tanzania, the report said.

“The top five parent companies developing oil pipelines are state-owned enterprises and private companies, including Iran’s Ministry of Petroleum, the China National Petroleum Corporation, Iraq’s Ministry of Oil, India’s Numaligarh Refinery Limited, and France’s TotalEnergies,” it added.

The United States began to impose sanctions on Iran in May 2018 after the former Trump administration unilaterally pulled out of the Iran nuclear deal.

The sanctions impose tough penalties on governments and entities involved in energy trade with Iran.
